Amazon.com Product Description
Sony's KV-27FS120 27-inch WEGA television is a CRT (cathode-ray tube) set that's both stylish and feature-packed. A silver cabinet houses a flat-screen Trinitron picture tube that cuts down on glare and minimizes image distortion. A host of technologies ensure vivid, distortion-free viewing.

One of the coolest features is the KV-27FS120's 16:9 enhanced mode, which delivers maximum picture quality by concentrating all viewable scan lines within a letterboxed image--wasting none of its horizontal resolution on rendering the black bars that border a widescreen image.

Velocity modulation (selectable: off, high, low) improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. The set's three-line digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Top-of-the-line component-video inputs minimize digital and line-scan artifacts from compatible video sources, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. You can choose between a set of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs for extra convenience when hooking up a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output offers both fixed and variable-level analog audio outputs for hookup with, for instance, both a VCR and a surround receiver. You can label the set's video inputs and channels for easy selection.

The set produces stereo audio with 10 watts per channel. Its fine-pitch aperture grill allows more electrons to reach the screen surface, while a high-precision deflection yoke guides the electrons accurately for bright, clear images. A headphone jack lets you listen in private. Other video technologies include auto white balance, Dynamic Picture Processor circuitry, tilt correction, Trinitone color temperature control, and vertical aperture compensation.

4 out of 5 stars Does have DTV Converter built in....   August 30, 2009
R. Hoover (Aurora Colorado)
I bought mine in Sept 08,the person that owned it was moving back East and didn't want to take it,TV was mfg. in Spring 07. Paid $180,been working great,no problems as described here. Maybe the earlier models didn't have the built-in DTV converter for over the air signals. I have it hooked to cable so I have never used that function. Only draw back it is very heavy to move, also maybe Sony worked out all the bugs in later models?...

1 out of 5 stars Be advised...Better you do not even think of buying a Sony   June 19, 2009

This is my second Sony Trinitron. Now this one has fallen to the "Sony kiss of death." It keeps turning off and will not restart. It will run from a cold start for about 4-5 minutes and then die. I have gotten repair estimates of $200 -$300. for a 'possible' repair. This is a common problem with a poorly designed power supply that overheats. Sony truly built a defectively designed TV. I am finished with Sony. It is all baloney.

1 out of 5 stars Decided From Now On to Purchase Anything Other Than Sony - They Do Not Back Their Products   July 9, 2007

After 2 years of light use (approxmately 10 hours/week), our KV-27FS120 is now useless.

The TV can be turned on, the channel barely heard, a few seconds of red and blue lines at the top of the screen (never seeing a picture), then after those few seconds, the TV turns off. The only thing left active is a blinking power light.

The manual's reset procedures and diagnostics brought no results.

As we all know, many of these units were manufactured in Mexico. It's not fair to Mexico that I'm stating this. But from reading other reviews, there's definitely a reliability issue with these particular models.

In calling Sony's customer outsourced service, I think I spoke with a Joseph from the Philippines, giving me an event I.D.# E345****9. As the highest warranted item is the picture tube, at 1.5 years, I explained to Joseph that living conditions in the home using this TV were quite clean and it was rarely used. I expressed to him that 5 years would be reasonable until TV electronics were start breaking down. I requested that Joseph escalate this and that Sony extend us free repair on our TV. He agreed and told me I'd get an email or phone call soon. I told him it wasn't fair that we took care to keep things dust free (at least on the outside) and that the unit breaks down after only two years. IT IS NOW OVER 2 WEEKS SINCE OUR CONVERSATION AND STILL NO CALL FROM SONY.

The TV breaks down after 2 years? Come on. Or should I quit my cryin' and start buyin' (a service contract)? I have an old Mitsubishi CS1984 TV that still works well after 23 years. This Mitsubishi is probably one of the few positive things I can say about the 80's.

In 2005 and into 2006, here are the other Sony items I purchased for some friends. 2 Vaio laptops, both of which had to be returned. Brand new and shut down 1-2 minutes after power up. Sony almost did not cover it. A video to DVD coverter, failing right out of the box. Again, it was like pulling teeth to get Sony to honor their warranty. An 40" LCD TV which I can say, is the only item that is currently working today.

In recent years, there was a report that for the first time ever, Sony reeled in a Westerner at executive level to help with its image and its untouchable/unreachable service. It's sad to say, that so far, I have not seen any results.

No matter what, Asians from surrounding countries continue to flock to Japan to have Sony products in their posession. We are currently deciding to not have our TV repaired. The costs for repairs estimated by 2 different local repair centers will be in excess of over 50% of what we paid.

Except for maybe their headphones, I will never purchase Sony's products again.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome TV   April 15, 2007

I've had this tv for ~5 years (back when the price was a hefty $600) -- The picture quality is crisp, and the options are quite nice. The tv does weigh a lot.

I've grown to trust sony products since this tv fell on my ps2 and both still works w/out any defects.

Since i paid at least $600 at the time it came out -- getting this for less than 300 is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Great Picture, Great Buy!   November 25, 2006

This decision was easy, as I stood in front of the myriad of choices at the electronics store this one stood out of all the other 27" flat CRT's in the quality of the picture!

I could have bought a cheaper one from a different manufacturer and saved myself $100, but between the added quality of the picture and knowing how good and reliable Sony products are, it did'nt take long for me to make a decision.

For now, it makes a wonderfull primary television. When the price on the flat screen LCD's drop to within my range of affordability, this will make for an excellent upgrade to the one in my computer room or master bedroom.
