3 out of 5 stars Big Regular TV, but No HDTV!   May 8, 2006

I eBayed this one. Paid about half of Amazon's maximum suggested price for a used set. It works, and looks good, but it's only a huge rear projection TV--no HDTV. So, don't be fooled.

You have to sit roughly on the same plane as the set to see the picture, and some clarity drops out the farther to the side you sit. Also, when I picked it up, the room was very gright, and the picture was hard to see. So, if you have a relatively dark corner to stick this in, and can sit level with the set, you're in pretty good shape. Fortunately, I do.

The remote is a pain, however. Being a guy, I shift channels until I find something to watch. The remote, even with new batteries, has to be held up over my head at an odd angle to get it to work. I tried changing to a universal remote, but got the same response--but without access to the TV's special functions.

One last thing...this TV has no seperate channels (AV1 or AV2) for your various devices (XBOX, DVD, VCR), you have to select each from a Video feed selector accessable only through the TV set's original remote control. So, you can't set your other devices up through your home theater system or other controller, and then just tune to the right station (AV1 or AV2) as on any current standard CRT, from 19" up. This is a potential disaster waiting to happen, should your original remote control ever go out.

It is a nice viewing experience, if you can live with the limitations, but I'd recommend saving your money and going for a better resolution or HDTV set instead. There are better sets out there these days. I would not have gone for this one, if I was aware that it wasn't HD-ready.
