Amazon.com Record your favorite TV programs in digital quality and play any movie format including DivX with full surround sound on this complete and unique HDD & DVD Recorder Home Theater System. Feature List - i.LINK digital input for perfect digital camcorder copies
Also known as IEEE 1394 and FireWire. i.LINK is the worldwide standard for connecting digital video devices, used on digital home video equipment such as DV and D8 camcorders, as well as PCs. Conveniently, it carries all audio and video signals via a single cable. With i.LINK Digital Video input you can copy your home videos in their original digital picture quality. - VCR Plus+ for quick and easy programming
With the VCR Plus+ system, all you need to do to program your video recorder is to enter the `Pluscode' - a single code of up to nine digits (but usually less) that is printed next to each TV program in most TV guides. - Dual Media records on both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW
Philips DVD Recorders support `dual media' recording - the ability to create recordings on DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs. Now you can buy any disc and the Philips recorder will always create fully compatible recordings, which can be played by any DVD player. - FlexTime to watch the beginning while recording the end
With FlexTime you can watch a program while it's still being recorded, thanks to the extreme speed of a Hard Disk. - Pause Live TV lets you take a break without missing a thing
A very large built-in memory records the program you are currently watching when you press the pause button. When it suits you, you can resume the program from the moment you pressed 'pause' as if you're watching a live program. - Record up to 100 hours of TV on the 80GB hard drive
- DTS, Dolby Digital and Pro Logic II surround sound
A built-in DTS and Dolby Digital decoder eliminates the need for an external decoder by processing all six channels of audio information to provide a surround sound experience and an astoundingly natural sense of ambience and dynamic realism. Dolby Pro Logic II provides five channels of surround processing from any stereo source. - Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure. - Movies: DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, (S)VCD, DivX
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure. - Music: CD, MP3-CD, CD-R/RW & Windows Media Audio
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and listening pleasure. - Picture CD (JPEG) with music (MP3) playback
Product Description The Philips HTS5800H is the unique HDD & DVD recorder home theater system. With it you can record your favorite TV programs in digital quality and play any movie format including DivX with full surround sound.

Too many remotes that do not work March 25, 2009 Artcops (Northern Florida) This Philips HTS5800H DVD Recorder Home Theater
The learning curve is very dificult with this system's two seperate remotes. I've owned this system for 3 months now and I still can not get the DVD player to do anything but play. It will not pause, forward, reverse, find chapters or any other DVD option. The recorder doesn't work either.
The sound quality is good for the price but if I could do this over again I'd choose something a lot easier to use and setup.
I would not recommend this to anyone but a true techhead who can sort out all of the difficulties of this system.
Skeptic won over January 11, 2009 C. J. Scalf (Panama City, FL) I was skeptical of a "refurbished" item but the price saving enticed me to take a leap of faith. Although it is refurbished is works great. I do regret that it has two different remotes but that's ok, I purchased a universal remote for under $20 and works just fine.
Philips HTS5800/37 beats all the best !!! November 11, 2008 Katherine T. Nowacki (Oregon City, OR) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My new system is absolutely perfect and I don't have any problems with it.
The video is fantastic and the real sorround sound is wonderful.
Recording on the hard drive is a breeze~~~... I have not done any recording on the DVD+RW or DVD-RW which I bought specially for this purpose but I don't really need it since the 80GB Hard Drive is sufficient for my needs... The quality of this unit is great...
I would strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys true quality...
My purchase on Amazon was also swift and the customer service was courteous... Thank You for such great machine !!!
Hard to review because HDD/DVD recorder needs repair. April 25, 2007 young codger (Hyannis, MA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had watched a total of three DVDs using the HDD/DVD recorder when the loading drawer became stuck (as signiifed by a "BLOCKED" message on the unit's screen). I had not yet tried to record a DVD. I actually thought that the "BLOCKED" message was because I was trying to record something from the HDD to a DVD. I'm still not sure if this can be done.
The home theater surround sound works very well in my viewing setting. I don't have a large room, so the relative distortion and audio response profile is not very demanding.
I give the HDD/DVD Recorder 1 star based on reliability and 5 stars based on the premise. Based on my setting, I give the home theater stereo 4 stars for the money. The total best that I can give the entire package is 2 stars.
Great system, but remotes leave a lot to be desired April 1, 2007 Solon Boomer-Jenks (Albany, NY) Sound system is great. DVD player/recorder is great. All the features I've used so far seem to work as expected. However, the remote controls are not so great-- especially the DVD remote. The sound system remote is okay, except it has DVD controls that apparently don't do anything for the DVD system. What's the point? The DVD remote is smaller, the buttons are tiny, and not so intuitive. For example, to get to a DVD menu, you have to push the "DVD" button. To fast forward or review, you hold down the chapter advance buttons (|<< and >>|). So, if you don't hold it down long enough, you end up advancing an entire chapter. Why couldn't there be separate buttons like every other DVD player?
Annoyances with the remotes aside, it's a great system. So, I recommend it to anyone who's patient enough to learn how to use the remotes.
