Product Description
The R40W46 features an HD Focus - an automatic system that eliminates the need to manually adjust the picture. Simply select HD Focus from the onscreen set-up menu, and it will automatically adjust the picture from center to edge. HD Grade Optics improves brightness and focus, and reduces overall cabinet depth. Most HDTVs use upconversion of analog signals (line-doubling) to simulate an HD picture, which introduces artifacts that appear as pixilated scenes due to digital conversion. Since R40W46 uses advanced digital display, these picture artifacts are nearly eliminatedMost movies are shot on film, and film operates at a frame rate of 24fps (frames per second), compared to video which operates at 30fps. 3: 2 pulldown properly detects and syncs film to video for smooth theater-like pictures at homeImproved CRTs maximize brightness and picture detail. Specifically developed for digital program content. 0.52mm dot pitch improves picture detail. Built-In rear carrying handles allow to easily move the R40W46 from room to room.

Amazon.com Product Description
Zenith's rear-projection R40W46 offers a scintillating 40-inch widescreen (16:9) image bolstered by a host of picture-enhancing technologies. The set offers full HDTV resolution, accepting decoded 1080i or 480p video signals from DTV set-top boxes or progressive-scan DVD players and satellite receivers. It also upconverts standard interlaced (480i composite- and S-video) signals, bringing VCRs, nonprogressive DVD players, cable boxes, and other entertainment devices up to 1080i or 480p resolution.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The R40W46 also performs 3:2 pull down. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pull down digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The set's HD-grade optics improve brightness and focus and reduce the cabinet depth to a manageable 17.9 inches. HD Focus eliminates the need to manually adjust the picture--just select HD Focus from the onscreen menu to automatically adjust the picture from center to edge. Specifically developed for digital program content, the R40W46's HD-grade, high-output CRTs maximize brightness and picture detail. Further, the unit's improved digital display eliminates most of the standard video artifacts that afflict typical analog upconversion, or line doubling (such as pixelization).

Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Fine (0.52 mm) dot pitch ensures a detailed picture.

A pair of 1080i-capable component-video input grants optimum connection with high-definition devices, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video devices. (For older VCRs and cable boxes, there's also a threaded RF input.) A set of rear AV inputs (with fixed-level analog audio) lets you hook the set up with your audio/video receiver, while front-panel AV inputs makes it easy to plug in a camcorder, digital camera, or gaming console for spontaneous use.

You get stereo audio (with an impressive 15 watts per channel from AV sources or broadcast programming via Multi-channel Television Sound (MTS), which permits broadcasters to encode stereo audio within the video portion of TV programming signals. Not equipped with a surround receiver? Built-in Dolby Virtual Surround simulates enveloping surround sound from the set's two speakers or, when hooked up, from your stereo system.

The set also features built-in rear carrying handles (making it a cinch to move), a trilingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French), closed-caption display, two-level mute, V-Chip parental control, a sleep timer, an on-timer, and an illuminated universal remote control.

What's in the Box
TV, remote control, remote batteries, and a user's manual.

Customer Reviews:
1 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment!   August 27, 2007

Our TV is only three years old and already the picture is out of whack! We tried fixing the convergence, but without ANY success! We thought it was our cable service, but our bedroom tv works just fine. So, we brought out our son's 9 in tv and hooked it up where our Zenith is and voila, it worked just fine. So, now we are going to see how much it's going to cost to get it fixed. Naturally, this is a huge disappointment! If it ends up costing under $100 I'll be a happy camper, but on the otherhand, if it's more.....:-(

THE BEST MONEY THAT I HAVE SPENT IN YEARS. EVERYTHING ABOUT THE TV IS PERFECT, AND THE 2 REVIEWS THAT I SAW ON THIS TV ARE TOTALLY WRONG, GREAT PICTURE AND SOUND. IF YOU WANT A HD TV IN WIDE SCREEN THEN BUY THIS ONE.

3 out of 5 stars Zenith R40W46 40" Rear Projection Hdtv-ready   March 8, 2004

An excellent choice for those on a budget who want in on the surging market of hdtv's. It has enough inputs to cover dvd, vcr, cable box or satellite receiver. Easy to switch aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3. Did have some problems due to no explanation of which audio feature was best among the selections available. The picture is a bit fuzzy seen from extremely close range, but fine overall quality. Bought this tv as a second hdtv for the bedroom and it "fits the bill". Excellent "bang for the buck".

3 out of 5 stars Okay for the money   February 2, 2004

Bought this TV in early January. The box itself is very attractive, not bulky and very easy to set up. It has handles on the back and wheels on the bottom that make moving it around very easy for two people. My wife and I were able to move it all around our living room with ease to get it in the right place. I was dissappointed with the picture. It is not as sharp as I was expecting. We just watched the super bowl on it and the players, numbers and certain details from the mid- to far away camera angles are blurry and fuzzy. When the camera views are up close, there is no problem, the picture is very sharp, but from a distance it appears to be out of focus. While it is still early, I guess I would say for the price it is a good buy, but in retrospect, I think I would have spent the additional money to get me into the next higher quality category.
