Product Description
Beneath the sleek exterior of each 161 speaker resides the technology that makes these speakers so versatile. Two proprietary Twiddler drivers in each enclosure help the 161 speaker rival speakers of much larger size. Articulated Array® speaker design positions those drivers to provide a large, consistent sound field so you can enjoy Stereo Everywhere® speaker performance from almost anywhere in the room. In your dorm, office or living room, youll enjoy the rich, full musical performance these small speakers can provide. And they are also an ideal choice for home theater applications. Connect them to your existing home theater system and enjoy Bose sound from your favorite movies. With custom mounting brackets, these elegant speakers offer a range of placement options throughout your home or office.

Amazon.com Product Description
A versatile choice for both listening to music and appreciating the sonic splendor of big-budget blockbusters, the Bose 161 multipurpose speaker system offers topnotch sound in an elegant package. Unlike conventional speakers, which radiate sound in a single direction, these speakers use Bose's Articulated Array and Stereo Everywhere technologies to project sound throughout the entire room, so listeners in the corner can appreciate the same subtleties as those in the middle. In addition, the proprietary Twiddler drivers (two 2.5-inch drivers in each enclosure) make the speakers sound much larger than they actually are. The end result is a consistently impressive sound field that simulates the cinema experience. Meanwhile, the speakers' actual size--they measure 11 inches wide by 4.12 inches tall--belies their big sound, so you can store them easily in compact locations, such as small dorm rooms or crowded offices. They even come with mounting brackets for installing on a wall or ceiling. The speakers' sleek black housing also blends into practically any décor.

Additional features include magnetic shielding, which protects your TV from video interference, and automatic overdrive protection. The speakers are computer tested for quality and reliability and carry a five-year warranty from Bose.

What's in the Box Left speaker, right speaker, mounting brackets, self-adhesive rubber feet, user's manual.

4 out of 5 stars Bose 161 - They Fit   September 7, 2010
RayS
Overall these speakers are decent. But as others have written, you need a subwoofer to use them as bookshelf/main speakers. As stand alones, you will be disappointed, especially in a larger than average room. You can't realistically expect speakers this size to pump out measurable bass.

I needed small speakers that would fit in my living room entertainment center. I had Polk TSI100 speakers (which sound very good for their size), but the rear bass port on those would rattle the back of my ent. center, so I had to look elsewhere. I found these and paired them with a wireless Polk (PSWi225) subwoofer (which I'd also highly recommend) and the setup sounds very good (after tweaking the settings a bit). Music sounds very good, movies are acceptable (not great)...but I don't have a 5.1 or better system...just the 161s and the sub.

Like others have written, there are probably better speakers out there, I'm sure...but these meet my needs (and I'm picky), especially for the price. Add a subwoofer ($200) and you've got yourself a perfectly acceptable system for a reasonable price.

I have long been an owner of a set of older bookshelf speakers. In fact the ones I have now, I have had for about 12 years and they replaced the ones I bought in college 40 years ago. The two had moved to the bedroom and were not doing the dolby 5.1 system justice. So with these two 161s and a Bose VCS-10 center channel speaker, the 48" 1080p wall screen is well supported by the five (5) jamming Bose speakers. Life is good! Boycott BP

5 out of 5 stars Gary's review for Den speakers   May 21, 2010

BOSE speakers are hard to beat. These speakers (BOSE 161's) are fairly easy to hookup but the mounts supplied could be improved.Speaker wire with a gage of 16 is hard to insert into speaker so any heavier would be a challenge. I am using these speakers for my surround rear channels with an ONKYO receiver. I have always liked the sound quality of BOSE. These speakers were matched with BOSE center speaker V series along with BOSE 701's.

1 out of 5 stars This is not plug and play   March 18, 2010

I bought these for a friend (with his cash ;))because they sounded as if all you need to do is plug them in and enjoy great sound. THINK AGAIN. Oh, you mean you don't have 18 gauge speaker wire laying around the house or perhaps you will need the 16 gauge if its more than a 30 foot run. How about an amplifier? BOX OF THESE ARE REQUIRED!
All I want to do is plug this into my damn cable box and enjoy. Why does life have to be so complicated.
This sucks and is going right back to amazon.
I got Bosed.
